Even Ghosts Need Hugs, Too

Who cares about candy at the church Halloween party? As long as there are decorations to play with, Claire's a satisfied customer. When she first saw herself wearing this costume in the mirror, she started growling — no coaching on our part. She's a smartie.

Red October

Here's a friend's baby from the church Halloween party the other night ... wearing a face that he keeps in a Mason jar by the door.

Flying Donuts

What do you catch when you're fishing with donuts for bait? A bunch of teenagers. This is a contest Madeleine was in last week with the kids from church. Thankfully, she lost.

Last Camp of the Blazers

This weekend was Malcolm's final campout with our troop's 11-year-old Blazer patrol. He was camp cook, which meant he had to plan three balanced meals, estimate food costs, get everything there, and be the lead cook. He did great! Friday night we had BBQ chicken roasted in foil with mashed potatoes and S'mores for dessert; Saturday breakfast was pancakes with sausage; lunch was turkey and ham sandwiches.

Before breakfast Saturday we retired a worn American flag passed on to us by the Jewish Community Center. It was a nice ceremony to start the day.

If you've got to sleep on the ground in 40° weather, there's not much better than the sound of gentle rain on the top of the tent at 3:00 a.m. as you roll over in your double sleeping bag, warm and dry. I'm not Mr. Outdoors, but this is something I can really appreciate.

Autumn Hangs On

Colors have been great so far this year. Many trees have dumped leaves but others are still hanging on. It's been a wet, windy weekend, but once it dries out I'll be out sucking up leaves with the lawnmower.

Bowhunting Skills, Computer Hacking Skills, Nunchuk Skills...

Uninterested in Malcolm's soccer game, Carter found a couple of sticks on the sidelines and began to demonstrate his martial arts moves. I have no idea where he picked this up.

Super Brain Freeze

Here's one of the boys from my class in Boston. He's destined to be an engineer or skyscraper architect.

3 Amiigos

Malcolm had his friend Samuel over the other day to play video games with him and Carter. Often these get-togethers devolve from gaming into making additional Miis, the characters you use to play games on the Wii. Thanks to Carter we have an cast of dozens of goofy guys with big moles named GRYZUGLX. Whereas, the older boys like to create cool dudes wearing toques with names like Chewie, along with several stoners. Since we don't have any coffee here, the boys figure this table is where you should sit instead. There's a whole underlying currency to this that most people miss.

Youth Temple Trip

Yesterday we made a trip with 20 young men and women and 8 adults to the Boston Temple. After a good visit there we took them to a buffet for lunch. All the adults sat at a different table, and they went a little haywire on the ice cream. Madeleine and three other 13 year old girls rode in my van, and I found they can be just as loud and rambunctious as boys.

Attack of the Tickle Monster

Roaming the earth for her quarry.

A victim! The dreaded through-the-fence attack!

Another one bites the dust.

Falls in Fall

This is Part 2 of yesterday's hike at Indian Kill. The two falls I photographed here are about a half mile from my front door. Despite losing my lens cap, searching underwater for my wireless camera remote (after drying overnight it still works), and walking through bunches of spider webs, I was pretty happy with the shots I brought back. I took pictures at these falls just over a year ago and I'm improving as a photographer already.

A Kill Runs Through It

We live in a beautiful place. The Dutch word for stream is "kill" and we have a lot of kills around here. Yesterday was a wonderfully slow day so during naptime I took a quiet hike along the Indian Kill, which runs through the back yards of our neighborhood.

Post 200 — Happy Thanksgiving!

To celebrate the bicentennial post of the Grandon Fan Club, I'm excited to announce Corner Gas Season 5 just arrived! It's our family's favorite — a TV show about nothing, based in Saskatchewan. It's not known or widely available in the States; we had to get ours from Amazon.ca. Malcolm watches it every night with his cereal before bed, though he blasted through all 3 new DVDs in the first 24 hours. I choose to savor them instead.

Up north, today is Canadian Thanksgiving, and the premiere of the final, sixth season of Corner Gas airs tonight. Pop in a blank tape for us Mum!

Freeman's Bridge 2

The days are getting shorter so sunset is happening just as I'm getting home from work. This is on the way home last night, I found my parking spot near the bridge, but it was an uneventful sunset. I'll be back to try again.

Shadows and Fog

The last two mornings have been really foggy and wonderful. Great photo weather.

Freeman's Bridge 1

The leaves are starting to turn colors, but I've had no time to go photographing yet. So the next best thing is a shot out my moonroof on my way in to the office this week. I cross the Mohawk River at Freeman's Bridge every day on my commute, and I've been scheming a way to get some better shots from there; the problem is where to park. I think I figured it out this morning. So this is Part 1.

Soccer Star

Malcolm had his best soccer game yet on Saturday. His team lost, but he made some great defensive plays.

Maryland State House

Here are some shots of the Maryland State House from my trip to Annapolis last week. It's a little different as it has a wooden dome on top which you can see from all around the old city: the State House sits on a circular parcel with streets leading out from it like spokes. Check out the dome on the back of the Maryland quarter. Does Maryland have the coolest state flag of all? On one side of the State House is a set of statues depicting and honoring Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who is from Maryland.
