This weekend was Malcolm's final campout with our troop's 11-year-old Blazer patrol. He was camp cook, which meant he had to plan three balanced meals, estimate food costs, get everything there, and be the lead cook. He did great! Friday night we had BBQ chicken roasted in foil with mashed potatoes and S'mores for dessert; Saturday breakfast was pancakes with sausage; lunch was turkey and ham sandwiches. Before breakfast Saturday we retired a worn American flag passed on to us by the Jewish Community Center. It was a nice ceremony to start the day.
If you've got to sleep on the ground in 40° weather, there's not much better than the sound of gentle rain on the top of the tent at 3:00 a.m. as you roll over in your double sleeping bag, warm and dry. I'm not Mr. Outdoors, but this is something I can really appreciate.
